Book Review: Well Read and Dead

   by Catherine O’Connell

If you omitted all of the fashion names in this book, it would be 20 pages shorter. That said, it’s a pretty good romp.

Pauline is “filthy rich” and makes no apologies for it. When the Enron bubble burst, she lost 80% of her portfolio, which gave her only $2 million and that was just pocket change. So she had to do some serious maneuvering to get back to what it would take to maintain her lifestyle.

She agrees to try to find her friend, Whitney Armstrong, who she and few others know is a he/she. Whitney disappeared, and her husband has offered a reward of $10,000,000. That’s enough to whet Pauline’s appetite, and she sets off in search of Whitney. She ends up in Bangkok and Cambodia, and some of the best and funniest parts of the book are descriptions of her travels between the two.

Pauline tries to fall for a very rich man, but it turns out he has wet, slobbery kisses and his sexual requests are downright kinky, so she scoots out from under that one. She falls for the contractor who is reconstructing her condo and… but I don’t want to ruin this part for you. Suffice it to say that Pauline survives unscathed (physically) and has her coffers replenished.

(By the way, I was on chapter 26 (they’re short chapters) before I realized the chapter titles were titles of famous books.)
