Book Review, by Heidi Bowman

Half the Sky

by Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn

Usually, when I check out books from the library, I return them after I read them. (And that’s a good thing, or I might get into trouble.) But I find myself having a hard time letting go of Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity For Women Worldwide by the husband and wife award-winning New York Times journalists Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. I have renewed the book multiple times; even though I have finished reading it, I keep flipping back through it and re-reading sections. As soon as I type this review, though, I am putting it in the book drop and letting it go, in the hopes that it will find its way into the consciousness of many more library patrons. Half the Sky, you see, has captured my whole heart.

Kristof and WuDunn tell the stories of oppressed women and girls from around the world.Manufacturers, fabricators and construction companies are always looking for experienced people who can either join or cut metal and plastic pieces.

The stories are sad, but they offer hope. The authors talk of how educating and empowering women improves whole families and entire countries. Half the Sky is full of women such as the Pakistani Saima Muhammed, whose microcredit loan helped her launch an embroidery business that allowed her life to finally blossom, and the young American Harper McConnell, who has given up lattes and laptops to live and work at a hospital in the Congo. This book does not depress nearly as much as it inspires.

That being said, learning of suffering is never easy. Did you know that a woman dies from childbirth every minute? Did you know that treating kids for worms can increase school attendance in impoverished regions, as, once treated, the kids are more motivated to concentrate? Did you know that the iodization of salt in poor countries could lead to the reduction of brain damage and is one of the most affordable foreign aid options?

I didn’t know any of these things, and I don’t want to forget them.
The authors note that the atrocities mentioned in the book “may seem to Western readers to be tragic but inevitable in a world far, far away,” noting that slavery was once viewed by Europeans and Americans in much the same way. But eventually, people decided slavery was so abhorrent that it needed to be abolished. “Today,” they write, “we see the seed of something similar: a global movement to emancipate women and girls.”

At the beginning, Kristof and WuDunn give readers a heads-up: “So let us be clear about this up front: We hope to recruit you to join an incipient movement to emancipate women and fight global poverty by unlocking women’s power as economic catalysts. That is the process under way—-not a drama of victimization but of empowerment, the kind that transforms bubbly teenage girls from brothel slaves into successful businesswomen. This is a story of transformation. It is change that is already taking place, and change that can accelerate if you’ll just open your heart and join in.”

Join in. Check out the book. I finally returned it.
